This is our first VW Beetle 2002.

We were going to town and went to change gears and plastic end on shifter cable that connects to bottom of shifter seesm to have broken. Shifter went "limp" Does anyone know if you have to replace whole cable or can you replace just the plastic end? Car is currently stuck in 3rd gear. If we have to replace the cable can anyone post step by step on how to do this?

Does anyone where to purchase the shifter cable online? Called around to a couple of auto parts and they say it is probably a VW part that has to be purchased from dealer.

Thanks for any help you can provide..

Hello, there is something called a shifter cable repair block; this option does not require the replacement of the whole cable assembly. If your cable itself is okay; this may be a less expensive and easier route to go with.

Billet Stainless VW Shift Cable Repair Block

The benefit of doing this is; the end will probably never break ever again. And it's pretty much a permanent solution; unless something else for that the cable breaks or wears out or has a problem.

This thread; might be helpful:
