I have a 2001 VW beetle. The engine is dead but battery is good. It is a manual transmission. I put it into neutral so I can push it out of my way in my driveway and it wont budge. Not even an inch. I am new to VWs and basically manual transmissions. I picked the car up as a project on the cheap so thats why the engine is gone. Any help on how to get this thing into neutral so i can freely push it around? please?

Based on your cars year; I would assume you have a 5 speed 02J trans. There maybe something wrong or broken with the shifter inside the car or at the shift tower on top of the transmission in the engine compartment. There are a number of bushings; that can break and the cable ends can break as well. You need to inspect the shifting mechanism inside and see if everything is ok and do the same on top of the trans. If everything looks ok; then, you might want to adjust the shifter linkage. For now; you could probably, move the shifter on top of the trans; to get it into neutral. Here is a video; showing, how to adjust the linkage.

Here are common parts; that break, cause problems with the shifter:

Many times; the shifter cable end adjuster bushings will fail, the rubber falls apart, over time. You can purchase; some drop in, metal versions, the performance is improved and it is cheaper, than buying new stock cable ends.

Another issue; sometimes, the shifter bracket will break, members have been able to repair this by making some new parts to reinforce the area.
