sick, broke tranny and or differential

871 Views 4 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  D2Beetle
while replacing drive axles on my 03 1.8 tiptronic beetle, I stood on torque wrench to remove 30 mm axle hub nut, wheel was not on ground! I heard something crack. Finished work, started car, shifts into both forward and reverse, can hear tranny shift and spinning, car won't move. Did I break something in tranny-differential, can it be fixed in car. all thoughts and help is greatly appreciated, thank you

So, let me see if I got this right, the wheel is off the ground because the car is jacked up and the transmission is in "Park"; then you stand on the torque wrench to use your body weight to break the torque on the axle nut. Did the axle nut come loose before, during or after the "crack" sound?
axle nut

Sorry to hear that. Normally you get that axle nut loose while the car tires are still on the ground. You really shouldn't have to put your whole weight on that nut if you use the correct breaker bar, a 25-27" inch breaker bar should do the trick. Harbor freight tools has that bar on sale for about 12-13 bucks.
noise came from tranny area, nut came loose later
Off the top of my head and a question; is it possible that you stripped a gear and/or crankshaft key?
