IIRC, it's not really a plug and play job, which is why the installers told you that. Really, you can do whatever amp your heart desires, but you're going to have to run your own wires. You can't really use the factory ones. I was hoping I'd have a better answer for you, but I haven't done car audio in a while and I'm having a hard time getting my brain going this morning.
