My wife's recently purchased 1999 NB has a mysterious noise when the driver door is opened from the outside. It sounds as if some type of small electrical motor is running to make some type of adjustment. What is the noise? If it is a motor, what is it adjusting? Will this cause a battery drain?

This is perfectly normal. It is the fuel pump priming the fuel lines. You want to be alert to changes in the sound as it can warn you of problems with the fuel pump. Also, the door latch sensors are prone to failing, so the fact that you hear it says that the sensor is OK.
