Stuck in third gear

Hi all. I have an automatic 2000 VW New Beetle GLS 170,000 miles that is stuck in third gear. I can manually shift 1st, 2nd, and 3rd but when it's in Drive it's in third gear. Going faster than 50 or so MPH sounds like I'm flooring it in neutral. Doing 60 has me at around 4000 rpm's. It won't shift into overdrive from third gear and it won't shift out of third gear into second or first automatically. I can tell because when I step on the gas from a stop it takes a second to respond and doesn't sound the way it did before this happened. Also, I used to be able to feel when it was shifting and now I can't.
My mechanic used a code reader to try to clear it but the code won't clear. It says something about the shifter? I'm obviously not very good with cars and knowing what the codes mean. He was going to contact his transmission guy today to see if he had any ideas, but I figured asking on here couldn't hurt.
Also, it started the day after we had a blizzard and my car got covered in snow since I do not have a garage or any kind of covering for it. I don't know if that will help at all but figured I'd give as much information as I could.
Has anyone else had this problem? Is it fixable/worth fixing? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

This happened to my 2000 Beetle years ago after I had gotten it, I recall the drive linkage having something to do with it. It was like one day it was driving fine the next it wasn't shifting and stuck in one gear. I don't remember it being in the shop very long or that it cost a lot to fix.

Good Luck

Thanks! I hope it's something like that so it's not too serious or costly!
What code is being thrown?
I don't know the exact code. I'll have to check with my mechanic on Friday when I go there (I work for them part-time as a secretary) and get back to you. All I remember is it said something about the shifter.

Hi! I know this is a super old post, but I’m currently having a problem with my 07 beetle that sounds very similar to what you’ve described. Just curious what ended up being the problem? And about how much it was to fix, because I’m not sure if it’s worth fixing. Thank you in advance!
You might start your own post, in the tranmission forum and fill us in on the details of what is happening, we can go from there. Thanks.
