Long time listener, first time complainer, here. My fiancee and I bought a 98 NB 2.0 about six months ago, and this started happening around Xmas. I'm not new to vw's (mk2 and 3 GTI) but this is a problem I've never encountered. Any pointers will obviously be appreciated.

Under acceleration, the motor feels like something holds it back. This is accompanied by a 500+RMP drop and a deepening exhaust note. The car occasionally idles rough, but usually when it's -5 or more. (Canadian) It happens in any gear, often first, resulting in what feels like a stall, until the clutch is depressed, at which point the motor 'comes back to life'.

Thanks, all.

Clogged fuel filter or crankshaft positioning sensor.
Also 2.0 models had problems with the ignition coil.

Did you have it scanned for any codes? I would start there before replacing a lot of needless things.

How many miles on the car and when was the last timing belt service?
