My new '03 Beetle has a regular flip-to-night-vision rearview mirror, but my recently passed *sob* Passat had the electrochromatic mirror. I liked it.

Is it possible to grab a VW electrochromatic mirror, from a junkyard or online, and install it in the Beetle? I realize the electrochromatic mounts a sensor flush on the windshield, so it wouldn't be a direct swap. I am assuming that the trickle of power needed could be leached off of the time/temperature display right where the mirror mounts.

Any insights appreciated.

I did this swap. It's really easy, but you have to find one second hand if you want a grey one. Due to the popularity of this swap, VW raised the prices of the grey version as an OEM spare part really much, like 300% compared to the tan one.

Once you have a new one, you just remove the old mirror, unplug the connector an install teh new one.
