Date of Event:
OCTOBER 11th-12th, 2014

This was posted already, but in the Events & Planning section without being specific to the southwest, so I'm guessing nobody saw it, so here it is again, copied and somewhat modified :

First things first. I agree that we should pick a different place to eat at the end of the drive. I also like the idea of getting something like Subway for the cruise itself so nobody's starving in the mountains. I'd also rather eat breakfast at a real restaurant.

I trust that next year, the employee situation at my work won't be so dire and I can spend more time down there, like an extra day on either side; the arrival so I won't have to drive 840 miles all at once and being awake for 39 hours straight to boot, and another day to do the cruise again and still take my time returning home.

The Days Inn is certainly nicer than the Black Angus, so it would depend on how cheap they'd go with a group rate. Otherwise, the fact that these 2 motels are right next to each other works out quite well.

I also think it would be cool to incorporate a time to just park all the Beetles somewhere and have a sort of informal show where townspeople can see us. No trophies or anything, just an informal gathering, like in a park or a large parking lot like Wal Mart or something.

Talimena 2014 Planning Thread

Hey, was wondering. You still have the FJR, or did you sell it? If no, are you going to sell it since you have the Concours -- or will be Concurs go before the FJR? Still enjoying my FJR and will probably have it for some time to come, although I really did enjoy the ST1300 that I rode the other weekend.

Here are my thoughts:
Food:
1) I really enjoyed the Limetree. But we most certainly can find a different place to eat. Mena is a fairly good size town.
2)The Western Sizzler worked out beautifully for the meet and greet and eat.
3)I suggest we place an order Friday night with Subway for Saturday morning pick up. They will do them up that morning, and have them ready for us. Do not put sauce on them, unless you want to eat it with a spoon. :) Then we can have a picnic at the Rich Mountain Fire Tower.
4)Show. We can circle the pods in a parking lot, at the Walmart, Marvins.... We could do like paper awards...
5) Lodging: I was surprised by the Bates(Black Angus). My room, besides the leaky shower and the piece of plywood they called a bed, it exceeded my expectations. That and the price was right! If we call ahead, we could get an entire building to ourselves.
6) Other things to do:
Cavanal Hill
Heavener Rune stone
Robbers Caves
7) Getting locals to join. Why not parade up and down Poteau. It is a fairly spread out town. we could spark some attention if we slither up and down the main drag.
I really like the Subway idea for a picnic Saturday! I didn't realize how hungry and crappy feeling I was until we ate dinner.

I'm still not a fan of the bates motel.. And booking early, it's only about $15 more to stay at the Days Inn (with the awesome hot tub lol!) If I can talk them down to $60 a room, would you guys consider it? Not that it was too big of a deal, they were right next to each other and the walk wasn't terrible :p

I would love to do Robber's Cave! The only thing, is finding time in that short weekend to do it. While it wasn't a huge problem this year, once we start getting more people in attendance, it's going to become very important that we stick to a schedule, particularly wake up time. I also think when we first get there, we should have our name, phone number, and even room number written down so we can locate everyone and no one gets left behind.

I think the car wash did a good job... We picked up 2 people, which I never saw coming. Maybe have a small show and shine there before the drive Saturday? That would entail having to wake up earlier lol. Also, bring chairs and stuff next time

I think someone dialed the wrong number.

Good ideas, Randi. I'd stay at the Days Inn if it was only 15 bucks more, as long as they don't go totally nonsmoking. The only reason I didn't stay there this time is because it was booked up by the time I called.

I like Dustin's parade idea, too. This is what we do in Roswell, but in Poteau, we could do it in the daytime without the bling.

Ditto. If we can get a group rate I would love the Days Inn.

It would appear that the Limetree's cuisine wasn't agreeable to the female segment of our group! :p I like Sonic for lunch/dinner, but I thought their breakfast was awful.
Alright. We will look for a diner for breakfast.

Not much luck doing a search for restaurants. But, if we all stay at the Days Inn, then we'd get the free continental breakfast... but I am sure we can find a local diner somewhere.

We should nail down a date. I think we should have a set date. BUT, the Poteau Balloon Festival is every third weekend in October. So, either we find a new base accommodations or we go a different weekend.
