I don't think the engine cutting off is a sign of a bad timing belt. Have you checked the fuse box that sits on top of the battery? This can be a known culprit and the alternator cable that runs from it. I had it replaced on my beetle and I show the parts in the video. That can be a number of issues. If you have a CEL going off check that.
