The wife's car needs a motor (BDC). Considering how gutless this motor is, and how bad the mileage is (less than 26, even when it ran right), I'm thinking about swapping in a 1.8; as heavy as this car is, it really needs to the extra power and possible mileage increase.

Since it was an option back when new, it should be pretty straight forward. Just not sure about cost, and is it really that easy?

The swap would be straight forward and the parts are cheep and easy to come by. You will need the motor, wiring harness and ECU thats all. You can get the parts you need on eBay for about 2,000 or less. Going from gas to diesel would be great but would require more parts motor, wiring harness, ecu, gearbox, fuel tank and a laundry list of small parts that add up quickly.
