Tire chains on NB?

I have a 2001 NB (1.8L Gas Turbo) with 16" tires and I noticed that the owner's manual warns against using tire chains. Anyone know what the story is? It looks like there is enough fender clearance, at least for cable chains, but I haven't actually tried putting them on.
