The power top of my 2006 NBC was working fine until Monday evening when suddenly it wouldn't raise. No sounds coming from the motor and top not moving an inch. Took it to the local dealer the next morning where it stayed nearly all day. They inform me a welding tool tip (the piece that screws on to the propane tank and directs the flame) was stuck in the top's motor causing it to stop. WTF? I don't weld! Anyway, I pay the $110 diagnostic fee and go about my merry way. Lower the top in the dealership parking lot just fine and head to work. Get back to work and the top will not raise. The motor is making sounds the sounds, but the roof is again not moving one bit. Take it back up there and they can't figure out what the problem is. It isn't throwing any codes or anything. Any ideas? I have been anxiously awaiting spring and warmer weather so I could drive with the top down and would love to have this issue fixed.

Assume you are not the original owner of this car??

Stuff can get lost inside the trunk, interior and around the convertible top mechanism. My guess is someone must have had something loose in the car that because stuck/wedged in the top mechanism??

The tops on these cars are hydraulically operated, but they also have a lot of switches and sensors that have to work as well.

If you hear the pump running, there may be a problem with a fluid leak or the pump itself.

You should be able to manually operate the top, but this is not ideal and I do not recall how to actually get the top to lock and unlock from the fully opened position. I am sure you can find something in the owners manual or search the web and YouTube.

Suggest you also check these links out as they have some good info.

You assume correct

No, not original owner. Bought it in late September. Nor did it come with an owner's manual ... which would have really helped me Monday evening, BTW, since the top stopped working the first time when I was an hour and a half away from home and wouldn't be returning until after the sun went down. Let's just say chilly ride. But I know the heater and seat warmers work wonderfully.

My brother, who has practically torn his wife's 2004 apart and rebuilt it said it could be that the pump may need recharged, as the last video posted referred to. So we will start there before we take drastic measures and I am left spending massive amounts of $$$ on unnecessary repairs.

Pump will not need fluid unless there is a LEAK!

I have 2 convertibles, one 10 year old BMW and a 13 year old New Beetle and have never added fluid, but there are no leaks.

Suggest you hit ebay for an owners manual, the convertible manuals are different, probably for under $60, I linked some to a forum member a few weeks ago, but they wanted everything for free.

VW does not have online owners manuals like BMW.

I have an 03 NB Convertible. Before spending any more money try this simple trick. Using the master switch (the wide one on the drivers door) put all the windows up, then down, then up, then down. Do this 3 times and it will reset the computer controlling the roof. The roof should then go up/down. It works everytime for me.
