The lower hose being cold could be normal depending on the situation. The upper hose takes hot coolant to the radiator. The lower one returns the coolant to the engine. Once the engine is fully warm (driving several miles) the lower hose should be warm, but still cooler than the upper one. Are you having any problems with the car?

Do not know the 2.5l, how does the coolant bypass and cooling system bleeding work? Do the 2.5l have waterpump impeller issues like the 1.8t and 2.0l?/

Do not mess around, get a OBDII scan tool that support Live/Real Time data so you can read the engine coolant temp.
