2010 VW BEETLE 2.5L AUTO.

Does anyone know what the best way to check the trans. fluid temp, when topping the fluid off after a fluid change, W/O breaking the bank on some kind of expensive tool?
I am going to attempt to change it myself to save at least $200.The local VW dealer wants over $350, and figured i can do it for about $130!(although i have never done this before, and it does not sound like fun!)
Could i use a temp/gun and just check the pans temp, since i already own one? (how close would the temp at the pan bottom, be in comparison to the atf itself?)

What about this little cheap thing here?-------------->>>>>>>
ELM327 WiFi OBD2 Car Diagnostics Scanner Code Reader for iPhone iOS AND Android-------------http://www.ebay.com/itm/331175483846?item=331175483846&viewitem=&sspagename=ADME:X:RTQ:MOTORS:1123&vxp=mtr
(The seller of this thing said, it would if the car had a transmission fluid temperature gauge/sensor.)

Now here is a really dumb question------ does this car have have a atf-temp sensor?
I know i have not seen anything in the manual about a trans.temp warning light, so does that mean the cars computer does not have a atf-temp sensor?
Anyway, how do most of you out there check this, when changing the atf?
Thanks for reading and for any help you may provide!

The basic overview is here;

Vw Automatic Transmission Fluid - How To Change Vw Transmission Fluid - Ravenol

Here is more good info; here:

I do not know; if some of the apps; would show transmission fluid temps but I would think, a infrared temp gun, would be good enough. I know; vcds, definitely shows the trans temps and it is possible, some of the vw scan tools that show live data, would show this as well (look on amazon: "vw vag scan tool").

If you want hard core tech info; about the 09G, check out this service manual: http://vwts.ru/vw_doc2/trans/09g/atsg_09g_09m_eng.pdf

Thanks again Billy!
Would you happen to know if the VW dealership, has a way to empty the torque converter when they do their $360 atf change? I am reading where some guys are changing it multiple times, but they are still not getting it all out, and now they have paid as much as the vw shop would have charged them.
