I purchased a 04 Beetle Conv. at auction, it drove fine on the test drive, got it home and drove it for approximately 20 minutes then I got erratic shifting and went into limp mode. I see all the posts about the valve body. I have inserted screenshots of the 5 codes I got from the transmission module below. Battery was completely dead when I purchased, maybe some of the communication codes are from that? Would love some advise from the experienced owners before I purchase a valve body if it is just low on transmission fluid.

Now that you have a vw specific scanner; you should look up the codes, on the ross tech wiki site: Ross-Tech Wiki

P0840-Trans Fluid Pressure Sensor/Switch A Circuit Malfunction

One answer from this site: "It's the temperature sensor inside the transmission.
It's part of an electrical ribbon that runs to the solenoids in the transmission. No easy way to get to it but to take the tranny out."

So I cleared all the codes and took the car for a drive. After about 5 miles of stop and go shifting, the car started shifting erratically. I took it home, did not go into limp mode, and connected the scanner again, no codes were recorded. I am thinking I am having the valve body issue as the car has 108K miles.

O9G Tiptronic, pretty simple and I am not even going to look up the codes. But glancing over what your tool displayed, there are TOO many issue showing up at once. Maybe this was from a dead battery, maybe there is a grounding problem or charging problem.

If the car has over 60k miles, the valve body is wasted and it may need some solenoid. If you got the car before it was driven a long time on a bad valve body the trans is probably salvageable. You will know when you drop the pan and the pan/magnets do not have too much metal in it. It will have metal, but as long as the magnets do not look like a Chia Pet you should be fine.

When the trans fluid warms up things get worse, but when cold they are usually ok unless the valve body is in really bad shape.

Valve body is not hard to do, rebuilds are bout $600, do not try to get a used or new one.

Search my signature for info on trans fluid change and valve body info.
