This may be a dumb question and obvious to some but I've been having troubles with my car lately and upon looking under the hood there is a part that was loose. We took it out and then tried to start it and the car still ran without it (don't freak out we shut it off right after we just wanted to see if that would give us any indication of what it was). I found a picture online so you can see it better and circled the part I'm talking about. I have a 1999 NB GLS 2.0L with an automatic transmission. Thanks.

sai pump

Secondary air pump is correct and yes it's needed for emissions. It comes on at random especially in cold weather starts.

The SAP (Secondary Air Pump) runs briefly upon start up when the motor is cold. It usually runs 1-2 minutes and forces outside air into the exhaust manifold.
