2003 vw beetle check engine light came on anf its for coolant temp low. Is this the sensor or thermostat. Sensor is the green top. Need help asap

Yes, VERY common. These cars will not turn on a CEL until the coolant is WAY below operating temp. 50F low will NOT turn on the light. Change your stat, and your sender.

I highly recommend you get a scanner on it to check actual operating temperature. If you have an android phone, you can get a bluetooth adapter for $15, and use the "Torque" app.

That probably solved the light from coming on, but I'd bet you're still running cold due to soft tstat. That means your heat won't be as hot as it should be, or as quickly as it should be, and mpg will suffer 2-3 mpg.

Save yourself a headache by not having to repeat the job. Use OEM tstat from dealer. Also g13 (current version ) coolant from dealer,mixed 50:50 or up to 70:30 with distilled water.
