Hey guys! I really need some advice here. Thank you in advance

About two weeks ago, my vent switch started acting flaky (the switch to turn the vent from face, feet, and defrost) -- I would turn the switch to defrost and it wouldn't work, so I would switch back to feet and then back to defrost and it would finally work.

A few days ago I went to turn the knob from face to defrost, and I hear something inside fall.. sounded like metal, and now my vent system won't work AT ALL. Something inside must have broke. Whatever it is that's connected to the knob to make the system work.

I'm not a mechanic by any means, but I am going to be bringing my car to my mechanic this weekend, so I'm looking for some advice as to how to fix this issue or what might have happened. ?

I've read a bit about it and some people said I'd have to replace the entire vent system.. Is this true? What happened here? And if this is true, is the vent system from a Golf or Passat or such the same as they use in a Beetle?
