Good morning!

I am about a 8 MM bolt away from a nervous breakdown!:(

02 vw beetle 1.8T throwing a 17608 wastegate bypass valve n249 mechanical malfunction p1200

It was orig. throwing 2 tps codes with it. I replaced the wastegate bypass valve drove the car and the 17608 came back 3 times (with out setting the cel) TPS codes are gone. I ended up giving up after the exhaust flex pipe blew.

Here's the question, can an exhaust leak cause an issue with the n249? (I know stupid question I think it's coincidental)

Am I looking at a defective part maybe or is there something else I need to look at?

X2 for the diverter valve!
Pull your diverter valve from the car push the diaphragm up with your finger and put your other finger over the small vacuum port on the top of the DV then remove your finger from the diaphragm. Your diaphragm should stay up until you take your finger off the vacuum port. If it falls the part is defective.
Keep in mind; that the DV can be bad by sticking, even if there is no leak in the diaphragm.

So true if the diaphragm will not move freely inside the body of the diverter valve this will also cause issues.
DV valve

You can sometimes get through by just cleaning the valve with plastic safe cleaner, like maf cleaner or similar. That's what I did to mine when it was sticking.
