What does it mean when very letter on the dash lights up

Assume you mean [P][R][N][6][5][4][3][2][1], assuming you have a 6 speed, or something like this?

This means there is a transmission related fault, possibly intermittent.

Usually an OBDII scan tool can read error codes, there should be codes even if the transmission display has gone back to normal.

Yes I was typing fast and it should say every letter. Anyway it is an intermittant issue. ill have to get an obd code reader.

Read about OBDII tools in my signature below. Most transmission codes can be read by generic OBDII tools that are of better quality/performance.

I cannot recall if the smart phone Apps read trans codes, but I know the CReaderVI does.

my 03 beetle convertible had the same issue. I ignored it for a while, and eventually sold the car. but once sold, the transmission died within a few months....
