Hi. My 2001 Stock Beetle has original wheels, 16 inch (width unknown, offset unknown). I'd like to upgrade to nicer wheels, possibly 17 or 18 inch if they would fit. Please, anyone, tell me what my options are? I see so many great looking wheels on the bugs on this site so obviously I am wanting same.
Thanks :kult:

Your stock wheels should be 16x6 with a 35mm offset. That is what my stock wheels are. I run 18x8 wheels with a 35 mm offset and run 225/40 Tires with no issues whatsoever. I wish I could drop my car lower, but living in the Chicago area and being a daily driver of 120 miles, I'll stay at worn out stock height. :p :D

Thanks, Opelmania!

:guitar: You rock for prompt and solid reply. And I like your wheels. I'm slowly going to rebuild this stock 2001 NB to give to my daughter when she grads from Law School. Paint job planned for spring, mechanical all done, wheels being considered. Is 35MM offset the same as what they call the bolt pattern such as 5X100? (My experience is with upgrading Jeep Wranglers so Beetles are new to me.)

Any NB 17s should fit, no problem, they were an upgrade on most all models. 225/45ZR17s on mine. Stock.

Nope. Offset is the distance from the back side of the rim to the center surface that is fastened to the hub. Offset changes how far the wheels are tucked into the fender or out of the fender. ;) The bolt pattern for your nB is 5x100. That just means you have 5 lugs and the 100 is the diameter of the circle that they make. :D

According to The Tire Rack Web site, the range of wheel sizes (and the corresponding tire size necessary to maintain the speedometer calibration) that fit the Volkswagen New Beetle without rubbing the fenders or the suspension components are:

19x8.5 with tire size 235/35-19
18x8.5 with tire size 225/40-18
17x8 with tire size 225/45-17
17x7 with tire size 225/45-17
16x7.5 with tire size 205/55-16
16x7 with tire size 205/55-16

Good luck!
