When attempting to replace you battery...
What you need
10mm socket (battery leads)
13mm socket w/ extension (front battery clamp).
A telescoping magnet (to keep bolts from dropping out of
sight)
A hex key (not sure of the size, but it's the same one used
to remove the cover above the coil packs).

1) Remove the fuse block atop the battery.
2) Disconnect your battery leads w/ the 10mm socket (there's also a supplied 10mm wrench in the spare tire kit).
3) Remove the hex screw securing the power steering resivor to the side of the battery.

What you weren't told...
4) At the base of the battery (+) side there are two (2) plastic clips which you need to press and pull gently easing the left shroud around the battery. This allows access to the 13mm bolt to the battery clamp.

5) Remove the battery insulation.

6) Remove the battery and replace.

Reverse instructions to put back together.

Local Sears said he had 4 other Beetles in the past week who needed replacement batteries so were not alone.

Good luck!

I replaced my battery last year. I just disconected my pos/neg leads and turned it sideways and it came right out with a few busted knuckles.
Man, you really got lucky! Thank goodness there were no leaks!
