I have a 1999 vw beetle. when i was driving my oil light would come on and beep. i added oil and it turned off. an hour later i went to the store and white smoke started to come from the exhaust. now the car starts normally but the second it starts it starts stalling out and shuts off. the check engine light stays on and flashes.

A Big Texas Welcome to the Org!

You can find a .pdf of the '00 NB warning and indicator lights and what they mean (I'll have to post up the '99, but yours should be about the same) here - http://newbeetle.org/forums/new-member-forum/51021-newbie-welcome-kit.html

The warning light is for low oil pressure, oil level is not monitored. Unless the oil were down several quarts, low oil should trigger a pressure warning. Did you check the oil level before adding oil or is there a possiblility you over filled it. There is another thread running right now, very similar to what you are experiencing.
