Hi all,
I got my first car last month which was my dream beetle, I am quite a newbie with cars so forgive me.
Last night my wipers stopped moving mid storm and I had to pull over on the motorway.
At first they slowed down, then got stuck in one specific spot on the screen. They make a super loud constant noise when they’re stuck. If I push them along as they go they carry on moving, but without my assistance they keep getting stuck in that one spot. My dad lifted each wiper up and it’s both that get stuck either way. On high speed with more force behind it, it managed to do a couple of wipes before it got stuck.
I was just wondering if anybody has an educated idea of what the fix would be from the sounds of that, instead of having to buy and try multiple things!
The breakdown man said it’s probably the motor, but he wasn’t sure which bit. If it is the motor, do I need a specific kind from different years? The answers are conflicting on google.. I have a 2009 1.6 new beetle hatchback.

You might check to see if the wiper arms are fitted securely on the wiper post. If so remove the rain tray and make sure the linkage is all secure. The motors can go bad but more likely something in the linkage came loose.

The lady making the comments in this video is funny, she has no idea what she’s talking about especially when she talks about the slob owner and the car catching fire because of debris in the rain tray. But it gives you an idea of how the wiper motor and linkage come out.

We have seen this in the past and lately, some as well. The common issues, seem to narrow down to: relay (typically work/not work; no power), then the motor itself or the wiper linkage (aka: the "transmission"), binds up and the joint become very hard or eventually impossible to move.

Some, try to fix the transmission and binding joints or just go ahead and replace it with a new one.
