Looks like a piece of plastic. My opinion of plastic shields is not very high. Useless junk. If it is metal it will be thin and the first road gator, brick, dead animal etc you hit and your oil pan will be history.
Here is a skid plate/shield/save your oil pan option.
Why should I buy a Panzer Skid Plate? Many MK4 engines have been destroyed by debris putting a hole or a crack in the aluminum oil pan causing the subsequent loss of oil and oil pressure. Our heavy duty aluminum Panzer Plate kits protect all of the parts in the bottom of the engine bay...
I have one of these on all the VW’s in my family.
Often cheaper than the oem plastic or thin tin metal shield.
Unfortunately I don’t see one for a 2017, so you may be stuck with a thin metal/plastic dust cover.
The chief complaint of these (ECS) is they are thin and do not hook to the underside in a secure substantial way but are rather attached like the thin oem plastic/metal dust cover and because of that don’t offer real protection. But they are heavier than the oem dust cover, and as such offer some measure of protection, certainly more than the oem plate.
