2000 2.0 will not rev up, but idles fine

My daughter's Beetle is giving me fits again. It is a 2000 . I put a headgasket on it about 6 months ago (and the usual other parts). It had the same problem then (prior to headgasket replacement) but something else seems to be the trouble now. Back then I replaced the front O2 sensor and coolant sensor. The car run well up to yesterday. Now it starts fine but give it any throttle and it dies above 2000 rpm (when floored). You can play with throttle and get it higher but it surges badly. If you hold the throttle at higher rpms, it has a rally bad sulphur smell out the exhaust and will completely die. I do not think the convertor is the problem. I had it off 6 months ago and was in mint condition inside. I replaced the fuel filter this morning. Did not help. Only codes were misfire codes and coolant sensors when this first happened. After clearing the codes and let it run, only codes are misfire codes (from when I was reving it up).

Thanks
Don

I pulled the coil pack off. There is a crack on the underside dead center running from bolt hole towards the other long side. Then on the long sides, is a crack also, just in the center of the side, about 3/4" long. On top is a crack running out from the center (15) connector at its base to about 3/4" from the base. Primarily between the coils are the cracks. The car actually runs smooth till 2000 rpm, then it bogs down. If you work it above 2000 rps, it runs but sounds lean and snaps out the exhaust occassionally.

I do have pictures of the crack but can not figure out how to post them.

update

I took it for a ride with the engine warmed up. Still ran doggy but it would rev up better but sluggish. Got a check engine light. One time it just died for a moment while going 50 mph and the check engine light blinked. Anyway, the codes were misfire codes. Starting to look electrical. Any suggestions?

So did you put a new coil on? If there are cracks, you should replace it.

....If there are cracks, replace it. Don't bother putzing around with it if that is an issue! lol

While you're at it-change the spark plugs/wires. They may have had some issues since your coilpack is most likely faulty.

Try a coolant flush/thermostat replacement if you feel up to it as well. Fuel filter, etc. Basic stuff. :)

Good luck!

wasn't the coil pack

New coil pack, same problem. Start it up, revs right up. Hold the throttle at 4000 rpm and it starts to slowly die. In about 5 seconds it drops to 2000 rpm and then tries to die. Let off the throttle and it goes to idle. Hit the throttle and it revs up to 2000 rpm and bogs (like a rev limiter or worse). Shut it off, immediately start it up and it repeats what I just said. Have new fuel filter and coil pack on it but seems like fuel pressure regualtor or fuel pump. Please note when I get it on the road and gradually build up speed, it will do better but does not like much throttle. Seems to improve as engine warms up, but is still nowhere right. One time, I was running about 50 mph, and it just died and the check engine light started to blink. Let off the throttle, the light stayed lit but quit blinking and I limped it home. Any Ideas?

Did a fuel pressure check

I did a fuel pressure check. Idling was 40-42 lbs. Reved up the pressure would drop to 25 to 30 lbs (very erratic). Disconnect the FPR, and it held a steady 42 lbs but did not run any better.

What are the specs for the fuel pressure?

Thanks,
Don

Me again, found the problem

I seen on here where a fellow had similar problems. He suggested disconnecting the MAF. I did and it run perfect. Hook it back up and the problem come back. I did clean the MAF the other day which did not help. With it disconnected, it did not give a check engine light. It is my daughter's car and she needs it. Can it be run with the MAF disconnected for a few days until she can find the money for a new one? I imagine a MAF will be equivalent to two of her Wal-Mart pay checks.

Thanks for all the help. Great board for dummies like me!
