For diagnosis, a VW scan tool; like VCDS, by Ross Tech, can help you read trouble codes, see live data and confirm, what the problem is. Check out this video; for common issues and the type of testing, you can do with VCDS, to see what is going on with the top.

This is showing a older new beetle convertible but i am sure; the newer ones have similar sensors and any trouble codes, may help narrow down the problem.

If you look at the .pdf file; the pages are watermarked "eRWin", which is VW's online service manual info service. You can sign up for 24 hours and download, as many manuals you like, save them in .pdf format.

Well, the top diagnostics; definitely, is helped with a factory level scan tool, like vcds by ross tech. If you haven’t tried (do a hard reset of the ecu; see if that helps with the top functionality).

As to the check engine light; scan for codes and post the results here, we can go from there.

As to obd11 vs vcds; each tool has its pros/cons. While obd11 is very convenient using a smart phone; they recently went with a annual payment model, to keep their revenue stream going (vcds, has no sub business model; software updates are free).

The enthusiast version of vcds is $199:

If you don't have a VW scan tool; being able to check for codes would help bring some sanity to checking things, rather then having to go back to the VW dealer repeatedly. Nothing, more frustrating then, having to be totally dependent on the VW dealer; especially, on intermittent issues, which can be hard for them to figure out, when they don't daily drive a vehicle, which may only misbehave occasionally. Solid diagnostics, on intermittent failure; maybe required, when the problem is actually active and in that case, live data, can help narrow down the issue. Back in the day, when my New Beetle was under the factory warranty; there, were a number of issues, they could NEVER resolve at the VW dealership, it took going out of warranty, me buying VCDS and getting so sick of the problem(s), that I fixed it myself! Even, if you don't do work on your car; having a vw scan tool, is very much worth it and can allow you to do at the bare minimum, code reading/clearing and enable you to do more testing following the vw factory service manual, to do a process of elimination. I hope you problem is fixed but many of us, have had to get involved in figuring out problems, to finally nail down, hard to diagnose intermittent issues, for good.
