The roads up here in Alaska can get pretty dark and hard to see during our long winter nights, and a run in with a moose on one can be dangerous. The high beams on my Beetle are pretty pathetic, which has lead me to the idea of supplementing them with a small light bar behind the grille. Ideally I'd like to be able to switch this light bar on and off with the high beams so as to quickly shut it off to not blind oncoming traffic, however I still want to retain the option of flashing someone with the normal high beams. I'm not sure about this etiquette outside of Alaska, but it's fairly common to flash the high beams twice at oncoming traffic to indicate caution ahead, such as moose on the shoulder, so I'd prefer not to blind someone when doing this.
My pondering this lead to an idea, what if I could have the light bar only come on when the fog lights are also switched on. Then during normal driving my high beams would work as normal, and I wouldn't need to add any switches to the interior of the vehicle. There's one main issue I see with actually implementing this though, and that's that when the high beams are switched on the fog lights are turned off. Which leads to my question, does anyone here know how the fog lights are switched off by the high beams?
On my Silverado I was able to bypass the low beams shutting off while the high beams were on by running a diode from the high beam relay back to the low beam relay, which seems like a trick I could repeat here for the fog lights, but I can't seem to find anything online about a headlight or fog light relay on the beetle.
