My 1999 VW Beetle CD player gets to disc 3 and stops playing. I change to disc 4 and 5 and it won't play, eventually it just gives me an error on the head unit and I have to stop the car, eject the cassette and push it back in and start over again. It never has worked good since I bought the car a few years ago.

So, I bought a remanufactured CD changer off ebay and it does basically the same thing. Played a couple of CD's fine then started skipping and having trouble playing. Eventually it gives a error on the head unit and I have to stop and eject the cassette and push it back in. It plays for a while and then starts giving me trouble a little later down the road.

It is the same cassette. Could that be the problem instead of the CD Changer?

Thank you so much!

I have the same stock VW disc changer; that I added to my 2000 New Beetle GLX, when it was new (I use it on a daily basis)! This has been my experience on these stock disc changers; they get dirty, dusty inside and start getting disc reading errors. I just remove the cartridge and blow them out with compressed air and this fixes the problem; for a number of years, until the issue crops up again! I cannot guarantee this will fix your problem but I just recently did this on another Beetle; that came in the shop and it fixed, that one too! It is worth a shot; let us know how it goes! :)
