Just picked up a very nice 2004 1.8 turbo cabrio. Only thing is when I come to a stand still with the blower on, I am getting an oily smell via the blower. Any ideas?

Have you checked for oil leaks? The most common leaking problem; is the valve cover gasket or cam, chain tensioner gaskets, seals.

Check for an exhaust leak. Also, try putting on recirc and see if it stops.

Crankcase breather hose was the issue. Apparently they are well known for going. VW didnt make them with an oil resistant inner coating, so they just start to crumble. ÂŁ41 for the single hose from the dealer or, ÂŁ14.79 inc delivery from an OEM supplier in China via Ebay for all three. Ebay it is!

I'm assuming you are in the UK? These rubber stock hoses; just DO NOT last, in this particular application. I recommend you get a silicone aftermarket hose; for this particular failure prone hose, the silicone hose will last forever. Here in the USA; there is 034 Motorsports but in the UK Creations Motorsport, makes a similar hose. I would contact the vendor you choose; to see which specific hose, would fit your particular 1.8T. The silicone hoses may cost more; than cheaper rubber hoses but their durability, make it the last time... you will ever have to replace it!
