Hi,

Hope someone can advise....

Usually when the Check Engine Light comes on, I can plug in my reader and get the code.

However, the other day the light came on in my wife's '00 NewBeetle and when I just checked for the code now, I got the message "No Code Returned".

Anyone know what to do when that happens???

Since there's no code then I can't clear it right?

Appreciate any and all input!

Mark

Clear all codes and hope the MIL goes out. If not ... you can try to induce a real code to clear .. I have never done that so don't know what to tell you to unplug for another code ... MAF would be my choice. Hopefully if it throws another MIL there will be a code attached.

So I'm a newbie, what's a "reader?"
Do you get something with your bug that you can plug in to read codes? Where do codes pop up? My check-engine light went on the secondd day we had our new 2000 bug. . .I think/hope it's because we filled the gas tank and maybe didn't tighten the cap right or because we put in reg gas OR????
Just paid $7000 for the bug and a couple 100 more soon for extra keys and stuff, and had it checked out before we bought it, so hate to pay more for a service call so soon!
We do have 117000 miles on it....

Hi mybug53,

A 'reader' is actually a handheld OBD-II diagnostic scan tool. Looks sort of like a thick calculator with a cable coming out of one end of it. You plug the end of the cable into the OBD-II outlet just under the bottom of the dashboard (to the left of the steering wheel).

Mine is an orange colored unit by Actron. Paid about $100 for it on sale at Pep Boys 2 years ago...great thing to have.

Someone else here mentioned they got a blue colored Actron off of eBay recently for $50. They said it had more codes programmed on it including some VW specific ones...

You plug it in, turn key to on position, then click the 'read' button. It will then see if there's any codes and display them on the little display. If you want to get dashboard light to go away, then you can click 'Clear' button and it will erase the code.

Hopefully, your code is something silly like the gas cap...always make sure that you tighten a few clicks past where it first feels tight....

117K on a 2000 Beetle....my wife has 33K on her 2000 Beetle....

That's it!

HTH,

Mark

That was me .... but the blue one is not an Actron. It reads the OBDII codes which are all engine and emissions codes and it also reads VAG Codes - which are the VW specific codes for Engine, Auto Tranny, ABS Brakes, Airbags and Emissions. The blue one is around $60 with shipping on ebay. They have a red one also that is about $10 - 15 less ... it doesn't do CAN ... which many of the 06 or 07 cars are starting to come with for reading codes. I have more specifics on it in another current thread.

Thanks for the clarification, SilverSportNOLA!

Would be great if you get us know what company makes that blue one...much easier to search for it than 'blue one'....

;)
