Howdy,
So, after trying everything possible for the EPC problem with my 01 beetle, we have resolved that it probably needs a new ECM. I have called the dealership and have found that the ECM for this car is obsolete! They do not manufacture them anymore!!! I have tried wreckers with no luck. Does anyone out there have a lead for me? I need part # 06A906032BS. I live in Ontario if this helps.

Just a heads up, bad O2 sensors can cause the EPC light to come on.

There are 3 circuits inside the ECM that generate a 5V signal used by different components for the ECM. The throttle body, accelerator pedal and O2 sensors all share one of these 5V signals.

The O2 sensors can screw up that 5V signal real bad and cause all kinds of issues, including burning out the circuit in the ECM. I've seen this sort of thing many times and in most cases, there are no DTCs for the O2 sensors, even though they may be burnt to a crisp, or wires all shorted together...

Since you are chasing an EPC light issue, REPLACE YOUR O2 SENSORS FIRST!!!!! Let me repeat that:

REPLACE YOUR O2 SENSORS FIRST!!!!!

There is a chance that may fix the issue, wouldn't be a first. What you don't want to do is install a good ECM only to destroy it (wouldn't be a first).

Also, with the car being an 01, it has Immobilizer, you will need to do an Adaptation reset in the instrument cluster so that the car will start and run. Details at the Ross Tech Wiki:

You know it's funny, of all of the things that various mechanics have tried- never the 02 sensors! Are they easy to get at? Is there a way to test if they are faulty before I buy new ones? I have spent thousands on this issue- don't want to put another penny into it if I don't have to!!
Thanks for the idea!!

Have you scanned the car for codes?
