Tell us the basics, year, model, engine, and trans type of your VW; specifically what trouble code are you getting? What is the history of your problem and has the problem being diagnosed correctly?

The car can theoretically drive for years with this issue; that being said, an evap issue could affect The fuel trims, can impact fuel mileage negatively and if the car ever gets inspected for emissions testing, instantly fail an inspection check.

Evap system repairs, tend to not be terribly hard but diagnosing the problem and finding the part that is bad, can be. Having a VW scan tool like VCDS by ROSSTECH can enable evap testing and reading trouble codes, can hopefully, help narrow down the source of the problem.

I keep pretty detailed records on my car, this is everything minus the oil changes, brakes, tires, etc...

I'm in NC and they do require an emissions test, I can apply for a waiver due to cost/part availability. After a certain age, the car won't need an emissions test, just a 'safety check'
