2 minute ghetto radio removal keys!!

 

I just cutup an old hack saw blade and put the angle on one side of two pieces. The width is just a bit wider than a hacksaw blade for reference. Works normally. Its also has the density and thickness to last and grip better.

So I made my own booty tool - like the one posted above, and now it's stuck and won't come out.

It's inserted about 1" total - with the notch-side facing to the middle of the radio.

I tried pushing to the sides and pulling out...nogo.
I tried pushing to the middle and pulling out...nogo.
I tried easing it out straight...nogo.

It's like something is holding it in place now.

The radio is not coming out!
The tool is stuck and not coming out!

What am I missing?

 

1) Did you watch the video?
2) After inserting the radio keys, its supposed to click.
3) After the click on BOTH sides, the radio comes out (with a bit of effort.)
4) After the radio is out, there is a little lever that you press to release the keys.

I see you logged on. Sorry about the wait. I just recently got home from class. I left my computer on and now I have to restart it so it could load better. It is running MAD slow right now. Status Update?

 

Well I finally got the makeshift tool out - but the radio did not budge.

The video says that the tool should "click" in place - this is not happening with my radio.
It feels like I'm pushing against a tangle of bent metal wires.

Instead of trying the hanging-file tool, I created an almost exact duplicate of the tool in the picture - out of scrap metal.
However, neither side is working.

Could you please draw a diagram of what the mechanism inside looks like. It might help.

 

That, I can't exactly help you with. Also, they say that the cheap keys on ebay aren't worth it. The best ones are the official ones. They are supposed to click, but remember that the key gets inserted pointy side out.

I noticed you guys keep mentioning the "click" sound. If it clicks you've gone too far, it releases teh tab inside just BEFORE it clicks. I've done this a hundred times already, once it clicks the radio never comes out for me. It only comes out when I push in just before it clicks. Do you have a cassette version or a CD version radio? With the cassette one you just stick your fingers in the cassette bay and pull gently while you put the tool in ONE side at a time. You will notice it will come out easier rather than trying to release two sides at a time. If you have the CD version just try to grip it somewhere that you can tug it ever so much with one key in one side at a time, the radio will come out. Use my idea of hack saw blades and DO NOT create the notch on the key. That is what gets hung up on the tab inside. Just create the angle with NO NOTCH it is NOT necessary. The tab in the unit is just a bent piece of stainless steel or something like that. You are simply pushing it towards the radio on either side, once its out of the way enough the radio releases. Thats why I say when it clicks you've gone too far, the click is the tab bouncing back into the lock position and thats why your too thin make shift file folder tool got trapped. Use thicker metal like a hacksaw blade or similar and NO notch.

 

I'll try a hacksaw blade.
However, I think the ones I have are too wide to fit into the slot.
I'll have to cut it down a bit.

 

By this time you could have gotten a set from VW for $13 and been done with it. LOL

And why pay for something if you can make your own - giving yourself a headache in the process?

 

It's rather easy.

Go to your dealership and purchase a set of radio removal tools. (some car audio
places might have some as well)

They simply insert into the two slots at the bottom of the head unit and you push out (away from the center) and pull out. The first motion locks the keys in place and moves the springs that are holding the radio in and the second motion (out) pulls the unit out.

By this time, I wouldn't be surprise if the OP didn't just pay Vw for the code... I'd suggest posting this on the Vortex since some people there work for Vw and do this on their home computers for free, but you saw what happened the last time I suggested something from the Vortex....

The hacksaw worked.
I filed it down to a 9mm width and removed it just as suggested by fohveh.

I pulled out my keys when I got home and now can amend my previous comments.

It DOES click into place - so it can catch a hold so you can pull the unit out. I don't know why I said you have to push it to the side..because I didn't have to this time.

I did make a really quick video ...it is probably pretty bad, lighting...camera work. I also took some pictures. To get the keys out you need to know that you have to press on the spring on the side of the radio to allow them to release.

If anyone is interested in the video or photos I can post them.

 

Well, for future reference, here are the pics I took anyway. The videos will be on Youtube after they upoad.
You can see that the key's longest side is about 2" - so if you were using the first scan of mine as a reference on the first page and trying to scale it...2" is the number to hit.
On the side photo - at the bottom nearest the plastic face you can see a spring...that is what you press to release the factory keys...or if you made a copy that allows them to lock into place and pull the radio out.

 

I'm saying sure just too see more pictures of Marvin's Dad's Child. That and the more how tos, the better. If only there was one for changing headlights...

 

Changing the headlights is so cumbersome that I don't know if anyone would dare attempt it on while a camera is rolling. LOL
Getting them off is one thing...putting them back in has taken as long as 15 seconds and as long as 30 minutes. Really hit or miss.
