What is that shield called underneath my car called. Mine ripped in half, and I want to order another from the auto wreckers. Do I really need it??? What is it for?

You don't technically need it, it's just what you said. A shield. It protects all the parts underneath the car, including the engine. If you don't drive with one, you run the risk of stuff getting kicked up underneath or having something torn off. My engine shield got torn up last winter by big pieces of ice. Had I not had the cover, my engine could've gotten torn up instead. There are a few different pieces under there (3, I think?), so figure out what you need then go searching around. If you want the insurance, anyway.

Buy a dieselgeek panzer plate. Made of sturdy aluminum, it will take anything the road can dish out. The plastic shield is crap, so replace it with a part that will last longer than your car.

Yes, it's more expensive than the plastic, but would you rather replace an engine?

One thing the guys didn't point out is that your fragile oil pan is partially protected by the covers...not that you get much protection from the plastic, but since your got ripped off it might indicate that the roads you travel on might be rough enough to rip off the oil pan next time. That is how you can justify the price - if you oil pan gets cracked or knocked off you will be towing and if it isn't noticed until all your oil has leaked out you might have to replace the engine.

We have one member that recently replaced his oil pan, one member that already installed the Panzer before anything happened and a couple that have had to be towed because of a ruptured pan.
