I had read or was told a while back that pulling a trailer even a smaller one with my 2000 TDI beetle would cause the Turbo to burn up, do to the small amount of extra weight or drag making the turbo work all the time. By reading this I am guessing that I was misled. What is your opinion?

My little turbo is working it's ass off while towing, but it's not hurting it.

I've seen TDIs pull some crazy heavy things that if that were true, would have caused the turbine to go pop.

Like pulling a colt in a trailer with a family of 5 plus luggage on the roof in your 2003 Jetta Wagon TDI.....

The guy said this wasn't the first time he'd done this. I couldn't believe my eyes.

Engine is the same across the board so, I'd say you were misled.

Installed my Draw-Tite last weekend... and promptly got my bike rack stuck in the hitch receiver!!

I don't understand how it's stuck, but I'm definitely going to get some power tools to shave down the mount on the bike-rack side as soon as I can get it out.

It's kinda stuck halfway-in. The holes don't even line up enough for me to put the pin through the receiver! It's just seriously wedged in there. If I shake the bike rack, the whole car bounces. It's pretty stuck... I'm not comfortable driving around like that with an "un-pinned" bike rack hanging back there, but after 180 miles of commuting, it still hasn't popped out or even become loose.

Anyone got any bright ideas? I found quite a few posts that say to cut the mount and then cut the stub out of the receiver... but IT'S A BRAND NEW BIKE RACK!!??

Use a piece of pipe (or something similar) and pound it out from the other side. You might want to lube up the drawbar with some PB Blaster first and let it soak for awhile.

After you get it out, you might want to grind it down a bit with a grinder - you don't want to remove the paint from the receiver as that will promote corrosion.

Good luck!!!

So after soaking in a magical concoction of Goo-Gone and WD-40, I decided to try to extricate the stuck bike rack. I pulled and shook like crazy. No dice.

I then loosened all the bolts on the Hitch RECEIVER, just in case it was torquing the receiver itself. Still no luck.

After about 30 minutes of fighting with the bike rack and shaking Nubz I was about to give up for the night, tighten the hitch receiver back and go watch Biggest Loser.

I decided to give it 30-more seconds of frantic shake/pull.

SUCCESS! Now to find a grinder.

Reading about all the hitch stuff got me thinking. My car, came with a hitch and I hate the look of it. Besides, what exactly would I tow with it? I have a truck for hauling/towing larger things.

I would be pretty sure it could flat tow my '69 with its towbar, as it doesnt have any tongue weight. Is this the biggest concern?

Im still debating taking it off, and maybe selling it cheap to someone who would actually use it for something useful.

Hmmm.....

Kirk, whenever a tow question comes up, I instantly think of you and Pam.

Love you guys!

:D:D:D

I apologize for the picture "whoring" but the question comes up quite often - maybe this post could be a "sticky" somewhere.

It's too bad that I don't have any digital pictures of our trip to the VW Classic and R2K in 2000 when we towed our pop-up camper cross country and back. There were two in our group that towed identical pop-ups - our '98 5-speed and a '99 automatic. Needless to say, we got lots of looks on the highway and were asked a ton of questions at rest stops.

so I have 2001 gls turbo. e trailer don't sell one for turbo (I don't know why, do they have different butt than others?)
anyways, where can I find a hitch for my beetle?
(I want to drive around the town with a trailer in the back that has an ad on it for my store lol)

I've towed a homebuilt trailer and an Eriba Puck to Roswell with my 2.0 automatic. No issues, save the wiring wasn't done correctly.

The wiring is now shot on the hitch, I am thinking of taking it off my 2.0 and adding to my TDI. I don't have a clue about the wiring though.
